As a parent I know the feeling of being disappointed with a child’s disobedience and what often feels like the need for repetitive correction. I also know there have been times when it was surprisingly difficult to remember the effects of my own acts of disobedience.
The people of Israel have grown comfortable in their patterns of disobedience. They have continued to widen the distance between themselves and God. Can you sense the frustration and disappointment God seems to have with them in this passage? God says, “I will get even, take revenge, turn my hand against you."
Yet, even in His disappointment, His love compels Him to keep showing them what is right even though His tolerance for their sin has not changed. “When I am done, you will be called faithful.”
God’s patience with us is unmatched, and this promise of being faithful to Israel despite their rebellion is pointing us to the ultimate gift of restoration brought to us through Jesus, that is ours if we will repent.
What do you need to repent of this advent season that might be creating a distance between you and God? Like the people of Israel, I need to repent of how easy it is to sometimes push away the One who gives me everything I need. I am guilty of my own subtle rebellions.
In the waiting of this advent season, find hope in the assurance of knowing that when we repent, Jesus restores unfaithful people back to Him. What good news that this includes you and me.
