Weekly Update

We serve a “Welcome Home!” God. This is probably no better illustrated than in the Parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. The younger son has disobeyed his father, squandered the inheritance, and now he smells like pig slop. The son comes to his senses, heads home, and begs his father to forgive him. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20)
 
“Welcome home, son!”
 
There’s a concept in animal science called “Natal Homing.” It’s an instinct within animals that enables them to return to their birthplace, usually to reproduce and then die. Loggerhead Sea Turtles, for example, swim over 12,000 miles each year, all over the ocean. Yet, they somehow find their way back to the beach where they were born.
 
In a similar way, I believe that God has imprinted each of us for Home.
 
Jesus is our Home.
 
Saint Augustine said it like this: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”
 
This Sunday is Welcome Home Sunday. Why? Because we want to be a church that leads people Home. And Jesus is our Home.
 
We’ll celebrate baptisms, worship Jesus, and then enjoy a great picnic with a bunch of kids games and fun for all ages. Who are you inviting to join you this Sunday?
 
My prayer is that we are a “Welcome Home!” church every day. Thanks for being a church that points people to Jesus, our Home.
