Weekly Update
GCN Family,
Jesus is perfect rest. This past Sunday, we looked at the 10 Commandments, as a part of our Lenten series called, The God of Covenant. By the way, all of those passages on Sundays are coming straight out of the Daily Lectionary Readings during this season. That 4th commandment (“Keep the Sabbath”) is often the most easily disregarded commandment. I would argue that, in our fast-paced and highly distracted world, it is a practice that is so glaringly missing from most of our lives. As Jesus said, God didn’t make us for the Sabbath (as in, the Sabbath isn’t just some arbitrary practice for humans to obey), rather, he made the Sabbath for us (as in, we were created to practice weekly rest in God; weekly being reminded that God is God and we are not).
I know there are a variety of work schedules, and sometimes workloads are so heavy that one full day set-apart to “stop producing” feels impossible. A couple thoughts: (1) Don’t let this be legalistic. We are not saved by our ability to practice Sabbath. We are saved by grace through faith! (2) If you aren’t already practicing Sabbath, consider starting out with a partial day set-apart. (3) Find moments in every day to set-apart to God. Jesus is perfect Sabbath rest. You won’t find rest by external behavior modification; you will only find rest in Christ. Sabbath is a means by which we allow space for the Holy Spirit to feel us. As we said on Sunday, The degree to which we trust someone is the degree to which we can rest. May we put our trust in Jesus!
Looking forward to this Sunday morning. We’ll have Jennifer Moore joining us. She has been a part of a ministry in North Macedonia for several years. Plus, she’s been a part of GCN for years. After the morning worship service, join Jennifer in the Goshen Room for lunch and an opportunity to hear more about what God is doing in that ministry in North Macedonia.
